The Lib Dem run Fire Authority’s Lead Members, propped up in coalition by Labour and Independents, have given agreement for 2 options to cut nearly a third of fire engines and close 2 stations in Great Missenden and Stokenchurch to proceed through staff consultation. They are now in “pre-public consultation” focus groups. The Fire Authority will be asked on 12th November to rubber-stamp the options going to a full 10-week public consultation to choose the “best” approach to service cuts.
This would put extra pressure on crews at a time when the Labour Government is imposing massive housing growth on our local area. We believe these cuts are unnecessary and potentially dangerous.
And let’s be clear — this decision isn’t motivated by money. In the last three years under Conservative leadership, firefighter numbers increased to their highest level since 2013, and finances improved so strongly that His Majesty’s Inspector praised the turnaround. Earlier concerns about fire prevention, fire protection, and equality & diversity were also removed.
When the Fire Authority was Conservative-led, we consistently rejected proposals to reduce frontline services. That remains our position today.
We are working with our MPs and colleagues in Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes to fight for the protection of fire services, ensuring that residents in Buckinghamshire remain safe.
